What is Reflexology?

Reflexology is a complementary therapy that is based on the theory that different points and areas on the feet, lower leg, hands, face and ears correspond with different areas of the body.

Reflexology is an ancient therapy which has been practiced for over 5000 years & allows us to cope better with the stresses that life can bring.

By applying pressure to specific points on the feet (and sometimes the hands), a professionally trained Reflexologist can detect subtle imbalances, release blockages and restore the flow of energy within the body.

The theory is that specific points in the feet and hands (called reflexes) are mirrored in the body and gentle and therapeutic stimulation of these points improves circulation, balances and relaxes the body, evoking a profound sense of relaxation and well-being, reducing stress and tension, two of the major causes of illness today.

Simply put, it activates the body’s natural self-healing ability and may be regarded as a positive step towards a healthier lifestyle.

Since reflexology is completely non-invasive it is suitable for everyone including children, pregnant women and the elderly. I work intuitively using all my senses when I heal with Reflexology and incorporate mind, body and soul.

What is Reflexology Lymph Drainage?

Reflexology Lymph Drainage is an evidence based, award winning non-invasive therapy which supports lymphoedema sufferers. RLD stimulates the function of the lymphatic system and drains excess lymph from damaged tissue, improving overall well-being in many cases.

This therapy has been researched and developed by Sally Kay, a reflexologist in the UK. For further information into the research and Sally Kay's work check out: http://www.reflexologylymphdrainage.co.uk

Where might Lymphoedema occur?

Lymphoedema may occur:

• In the arm after breast cancer treatment if the nodes are removed
• In the leg if cancer or its treatment affects the lymph nodes in the groin area or the pelvis.

This is most common in prostate cancer, cancer of the womb, cervix or ovary.

“Every year, almost 3,400 women and approximately 30 men are diagnosed with breast cancer”
(Irish Cancer Society)

Due to advances in medical science the number of people surviving Breast Cancer beyond 20 years has risen considerably.

• Approximately 20% of the survivors will suffer from Lymphoedema.
• It is common for underarm lymph nodes to be removed during breast surgery.
• The lymph fluid can no longer be drained from the arm and this can result in tissue swelling and the arm can swell considerably. The swelling may fluctuate through the day and if untreated will usually increase in severity. It can cause aching, a heavy feeling, discomfort, difficulty walking, tight skin, difficulty in movement.
• Due to an altered body image after breast cancer many people have very significant psychological and physical side effects ranging from anxiety, stress, loss of confidence and discomfort wearing certain clothing and jewellery.

What to expect during RLD treatments?

RLD sessions help aid the symptoms associated with lymphoedema. At the initial session, you will complete a health and lifestyle consultation and at the beginning and end of each RLD session, it is possible to take volume measurements of the affected limbs (Arm or Leg) in order to determine volume change. This can help to quantify any changes although is not obligatory. Treatments take place on the feet and clients do NOT need to remove any clothing.
